MacroPad Studio support
For setup questions, device compatibility or a problem with the app, email rupert@rupertlaycock.com.
What you need
- An Apple silicon Mac running macOS 13 or later.
- A compatible USB macro pad and a data-capable USB cable.
- For some VIA devices, the correct JSON definition from the device maker. Vial settings can also be imported.
Selected CH57x pads and QMK/VIA/Vial dynamic keymaps are supported. Not every device sold under a familiar brand or enclosure is compatible. If unsure, ask before purchasing the app and include the exact model, controller and firmware if known.
Basic setup
- Connect the pad over USB and choose Read Connected Pad.
- If requested for a VIA device, import its matching definition file.
- Select a control on the visual pad, then edit its name or action. Insert Key opens the key library and shortcut recorder.
- Check the selected onboard layer and orientation. Save a preset if you want a reusable local copy.
- Review your assignments, then confirm Flash to Keyboard only when you intend to update the connected pad.
Flash to Keyboard writes the supported onboard key configuration. It does not install firmware. Save and Presets are local operations, not confirmation that a hardware write has occurred.
If the pad is not detected
Check the cable supports data, reconnect directly to the Mac if practical and confirm the device has compatible firmware. A product label alone does not identify its controller. Do not install unknown firmware as a troubleshooting step.
When reporting a problem
Include the app version, macOS version, exact pad model, connection method, what you expected and any error text. A screenshot of the layout can help. Remove private shortcut names, serial numbers and other personal information before sending files. Never send passwords or security codes.
The Mac App Store release is in preparation and is not available for purchase yet.
